Adventures in Potty Training: Part Four

Tony is Potty Trained

It has been a week and a half, so I think it is safe to say that we have successfully potty trained Tony! The decision to resume potty training was made by mommy last Monday when Tony woke up. She simply told him he was wearing underwear the rest of the day whether he liked it or not.

Tony screamed, cried and hollered for about 30 minutes until mommy told him he would not be able to go The Fractured Prune, a make-your-own doughnut place in Ocean City unless he put pants on over his underwear. This caused Tony to stop crying almost immediately.

He went the entire first day without an accident. Tuesday, we went on an adventure to the Cape May Zoo, and Tony went accident free that day too.

He had a tiny accident on Wednesday, but nothing that set him back in his efforts. We are now more than one week from the start date and Tony has had one accident and plenty of success on the toilet, using it for everything. He only wears diapers at bedtime right now.

Tony does not even use his Elmo potty anymore. He has also stopped using his potty seat cushion that goes on the regular toilet. Now, he just walks by himself into the bathroom, turns the light on and plops down on the toilet to do his business. He flushes, washes his hands and turns the light off by himself as well.

He loves to announce that he is headed to the bathroom and what he accomplishes while in there, and we will take that anyday over having him continue to wear diapers.

Tony is not shy about telling everyone he encounters that he is wearing big boy underpants. He also doesn’t mind showing everyone. When he visited grandmom, poppi, Gia, GG, Uncle Jimmie and Uncle Kevin last weekend he walked into their house and proceeded to drop his shorts to display his underwear.

Hey, as long as he continues to be excited to use the bathroom and doesn’t drop trough in public, I am fine with how he tells (shows) family.

Each morning Tony gets to pick a new pair of underwear to rock for the day. Whether it is Paw Patrol, Mickey Mouse, Sesame Street or Cars; Tony likes variety when it comes to his undergarments.

Sunday we decided to take a trip to Cape May so Tony could see the lighthouse (story for a later date). He made it the 30 minute drive to Cape May without an accident. He did the same on the ride back to Ocean City. He also told us twice while walking around town that he had to use the bathroom.

That is the best part of this whole process; seeing Tony grasp the concept that when he knows he has to go all he has to do is tell someone when we are out or just go to the bathroom when we are home on his own.

This was quite a fight for the past couple of years with Tony, but all of it came to a head last Monday. Maybe it was the fact that while he would be wearing a diaper he would stand up from the couch or the bed because he didn’t want to pee while on the furniture. Maybe it was the fact that mommy woke up last Monday morning, hid the rest of Tony’s diapers, and told him it was time for underwear no matter what he thought.

Whatever it was; Tony is now potty trained and all of us are incredibly proud of how quickly he did it last week and how he has stuck to it.
