Tony (And Enzo) Climb to the Top of the Cape May Lighthouse

Cape May Lighthouse

This past Sunday we decided to put the boys in the car (“It’s a truck”) and take a ride to Cape May. Tony had never been to the Cape May Lighthouse and always asks about lighthouses when we are in Ocean City, so we figured it would be a light traffic day and cool enough to climb the hundreds (199) of stairs.

We hit the nail on the head when it came to traffic; there was practically no one on the Garden State Parkway southbound because we left for Cape May around 2, which meant most day trippers were already plopped on the beaches of Cape May County.

Tony fell asleep not long before our arrival in the Victorian town, but seemed to know just when to wake up as he all of a sudden asked, “Are we in Cape May?” as we pulled into Cape May Point State Park where the lighthouse is located.

After parking the truck and letting Tony use the bathroom (I know, he’s potty trained!), we ventured over to the lighthouse for our journey up the 199 steps to the lookout platform at the top. Every so often on the climb upwards there are cutouts in the walls for windows. Tony wanted to stop at each window so I could pick him up to look out at different vantage points.

Tony did an incredible job climbing to the top of the lighthouse. He led the pack, all by himself, holding the railing the entire length of the climb. I walked directly behind him with my hands at the ready because those steps are quite narrow. Mommy and Enzo followed close behind as Mommy got the workout of a lifetime by carrying our little linebacker up the 199 steps.

Upon reaching the top of the lighthouse Tony had a blast. He looked to the left towards Cape May City at one point and asked, “Is that Nonna’s shore house?” Sadly we had to tell him no, but he wasn’t too disappointed. I really think he thought he would be able to see Ocean City from the lighthouse. Nonetheless, Tony had a blast walking around the outdoor platform at the top of the lighthouse on Sunday. He couldn’t get over how cool it was to be so high up off the ground right near the beach and the ocean.

We ventured into Cape May City for a couple of hours after the visit to the lighthouse so we could grab something to eat. Tony enjoyed some chocolate ice cream, until he spilled most of it on his pants, as Enzo begged for some of Mommy’s. The drive home was just as easy as the drive down and Tony survived the entire car ride without an accident yet again!
