I was sitting in my chair on this chilly Tuesday morning trying to get some work done while Tony ran around the room like a maniac.
Nonna was in Enzo’s room trying to get him to go down for a nap.
Tony has been a menace this morning, chasing the dog with his microphone stand and poking her to the point of making her bark, which in turn woke up Enzo from an early-morning nap.
Then, he took all of his Mickey Mouse Clubhouse tools and threw them all over the floor. Nothing fazes this child when trying to discipline him, except that he is does not want to be sent to his room.
To make matters worse this morning, Tony came to the realization that he no longer wants to have his 3rd birthday party towards the end of March.
Why?
The issue stems from a deal the entire family made with Tony: Once he turns three he would no longer be wearing diapers, only big boy underwear, and he would no longer be sleeping in a crib, only a big boy bed.
This is not good.
We have been trying to potty train Tony for months and have failed miserably, as have many parents. Tony was given an Elmo potty for his second birthday by Aunt MeMe and Uncle Paul, but all he does is play with it. He will sit on it, but his clothes have to be on. This is not making progress.
God forbid you tell him to take off his pants and diaper and then sit on the Elmo potty. He has such a meltdown that you’d think we asked him to sleep outside.
Mommy came up with the deal a couple of months ago, telling Tony that companies do not make diapers big enough for three-year-olds.
Each time we tried to get him to wear big boy underwear or use the potty, Tony would say, “Remember, not until I’m three.”
So, ever since the deal was made, we have all been reminding him of it and that he is running out of time.
Well, this morning he stated out of nowhere that the deal is off. In my words, he would like to void the deal.
He does not want a birthday party because he does not want us to take away his diapers or his crib.
I have never met a child at this age who has yet to attempt climbing out of a crib. He absolutely loves his crib. We keep telling him that once he gets a big boy bed he will be able to have Phoebe sleep in it with him. He kind of likes the idea, he even asked her this morning if she wanted to sleep in a big boy bed with him.
Where do we go from here?
We might have to reinforce the deal from now until March 22 in an attempt to renew his interest and enthusiasm in making the changes once he turns three.
