Adventures in Potty Training: Part Three

Tony and Enzo in OC 4th of July

Friday was an incredibly successful day in our potty training adventure with Tony. He wore big boy underwear almost the entire day and even used his Elmo potty multiple times. The adventure gets more interesting each time we try, but this was definitely one of the most successful days in our venture so far.

When Tony woke up Friday morning, Mommy told him he was going to wear big boy underwear all day. He happily agreed and even said he wanted to use his Elmo potty right off the bat. None of us knew what we were in store for that day in terms of how easy he would handle the potty.

Tony sat on his Elmo potty for quite some time before he made a little deposit. What made this day even more special was that it came one day prior to Mommy’s birthday, and she kept telling Tony that all she wanted was for him to use the potty.

Tony made trips to and from the bathroom all morning and afternoon before and after he went to the beach. A couple of the visits to the potty were exactly what we were hoping for as Tony really filled the bowl. He would get so excited at his success that he would come screaming out of the bathroom, telling anyone he saw what he had done.

At one point, Tony went outside to help Nonna walk Lola and he ran into one of our neighbors, Miss Charlotte, who he loves to speak with every chance he gets. Tony told Miss Charlotte of his conquest and how he gets a piece of candy when he goes.

She asked what type of candy it was and Tony obliged, saying it was a Jolly Rancher watermelon bite. The next thing we know, there is a knock on the door later that day and Miss Charlotte dropped off a bag of the candy with her husband, Uncle Glenn, saying Tony can only open it if he goes to the potty again.

We are not alone in this adventure, or battle, however you want to look at it. Now we have the neighbors involved, encouraging Tony to use the potty each time they see him in the alley, on the beach or out walking Lola with Nonna.

Tony continued to wear underwear the rest of the day and to use the potty because he wanted to show Grandmom and Poppi how well he did when they came over that night to celebrate Mommy’s birthday. He was so excited when they walked in the door that he started screaming at them, “I used the potty today! And I am wearing big boy underwear!”

Tony had just two accidents on Friday, and neither of them were big ones. They also did not deter him from the task at hand.

Hopefully our adventures in potty training from Friday were a step in the right direction. It looks to be the right step because as I write this, Tony is wandering around in big boy underwear and has already used the potty today.

So, three cheers to Tony for taking a big step in his potty training adventure as he moves closer to being out of diapers for good.
